Secretary, Airports Security Force

The Airport Security Force (ASF) of Pakistan is a specialized paramilitary agency entrusted with safeguarding the nation’s civil aviation sector. Established in 1976 under the Ministry of Aviation, the ASF ensures the safety and security of airports, passengers, airline staff, and aviation infrastructure. The force’s primary mission is to prevent threats like terrorism, hijackings, and illegal activities at airports, maintaining a secure environment for air travel.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Airport and Infrastructure Security: The ASF is responsible for securing vital airport infrastructure, including terminals, runways, control towers, and cargo areas. It ensures that restricted zones are accessible only to authorized personnel, preventing unauthorized access.

  2. Passenger and Baggage Screening: One of the force’s core duties is to conduct rigorous security screenings of passengers and their luggage using advanced technologies like X-ray machines, metal detectors, and explosive detection systems. This ensures that dangerous items like weapons or explosives do not make it onto aircraft.

  3. Aircraft Protection: The ASF is also tasked with securing aircraft on the ground. Personnel monitor aircraft during ground operations to prevent tampering, hijacking, or any other form of sabotage. Aircraft security involves checking for potential threats and unauthorized access to planes parked at gates or on runways.

  4. Counter-Terrorism and Emergency Response: ASF plays a critical role in counter-terrorism operations. In the event of an emergency—such as bomb threats, hijacking attempts, or active shooter situations—ASF swiftly responds to neutralize the threat. The force collaborates with other security and law enforcement agencies to manage such incidents.

  5. Cargo and Freight Security: ASF ensures that all cargo passing through airports undergoes strict security checks to prevent the transportation of illegal or dangerous items. This includes scanning shipments for explosives, narcotics, and other contraband.

  6. Surveillance and Intelligence: Continuous surveillance through CCTV cameras and intelligence gathering is essential to the ASF’s operations. The force monitors passenger activities and inspects areas for suspicious behavior, working closely with intelligence agencies to prevent potential threats.

Structure and Training

The ASF operates under the direction of the Director General (DG), who oversees airport security across the country. The force has a hierarchical structure, with regional commanders responsible for major airports. Personnel include constables, sub-inspectors, assistant sub-inspectors, and head constables. Specialized units such as bomb disposal teams, canine units, and special response teams are part of the ASF to tackle specific threats.

ASF recruits its personnel through competitive exams and physical fitness assessments, followed by comprehensive training at the Airport Security Force Training Academy in Karachi. The training includes counter-terrorism tactics, advanced screening procedures, fire safety, and emergency response skills.

Technological Tools

The ASF uses cutting-edge technology to enhance its security measures. This includes X-ray machines, full-body scanners, explosive trace detectors, and metal detectors. The implementation of biometric systems for passenger screening and drone detection technologies further strengthens the force’s ability to prevent potential threats.
